Staff Handbook - Policies and Procedures

Safety Harness Policy

1 It is important that all employees follow these regulations in regards to safety harnesses because it can mean saving your own or someone else’s life.

2

Safety Harnesses and Lanyards

2.1 Safety harnesses and lanyards will be provided and used when other control measures to prevent falls are not practicable.

2.2 You will be responsible for the safe condition of your harness and lanyard(s). If you lose your equipment due to neglect, you will be required to pay for a replacement.

2.3 If you do not wear your harness and lanyard you are in breach of your contract of employment, and this is classified as a gross mis-conduct and you will be disciplined.

3

Principals for Safe Work at Height

3.1 Where the potential for falls cannot be practicably and totally eliminated then it is important that safety harnesses and lanyards are worn and used correctly. This will minimise the consequences of a fall, should one occur. 3.2 During the erection and dismantling process, harnesses will be worn. Furthermore, Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding Ltd operatives will always work to SG4. In order to work to SG4 Chris Sedgeman scaffolding Ltd operatives will use a “step-up” system to install, and remove, advanced handrails. 3.3 Twin Dove Tailed (Double Lanyards) lanyards will be used when scaffolders have to access structures without a boarded platform e.g. bridging using beams or temporary roofs erected in situ. The main benefit of using a double lanyard is that it allows you to crab along a beam using the protection traversing technique for climbing a structure. 4.1 Safety harnesses and lanyards will be subject to regular three-monthly inspections and maintenance as per the manufacturer’s guidance, which will be carried out by a charge-hand/supervisor or safety officer as per the SG4 guidance. 4.2 However, every day when using your safety harness, you must give it an inspection to ensure that it is safe to use. If you come across any problems with the condition of your harness and lanyard or it is not safe to use then please report this to Chris Sedgeman or Lynn Way and following an inspection a new one will be issued if needed. 4 Inspections
